Story Behind the Art:
My mother, Bonny Karstadt Shah, founded the company with my father Ratilal Shah soon after they were married, in 1968. Despite my mother’s passing in 2004 and my father’s in 2008, I developed a fierce determination to take Maharani to a new level that would have made them proud. Both of them were dedicated to fair trade and immediately stepped in to help to rebuild homes for hundreds of villagers out of their own pocket after Kutch, part of Gujarat, was hit with a major earthquake in 2001. Both were big supporters of educating women, helping dozens of bright students get their nursing degrees, and we are continuing their dream.
